Just a couple observations regarding the USCG: Firstly, I was a little surprised they were operating off the coast of Panama..I always presumed the coast they were guarding was OURS. Any idea just how far their jurisdiction runs? Secondly, security stuff aside, the most impressive thing about the fine organization are the rescues those folks do routinely. The danger and difficulty faced by those crews are often immense..it seems that to save lives, they rush in where angels………..
The Coast Guard was in Vietnam during the late 1960s and early 1970s, patrolling and boarding junks and sampans to search them for weapons and VC, and accounted for over 1,000 VC kills. They are in Iraq.
Here in our neck of the woods, they have a 300 mile offshore terrirorial limit to patrol.
The primary purpose of my old alma mater, before all else, is Search & Rescue, and when I served I did quite a bit of SAR work as a deckie, working off a medium and then a couple of high endurance cutters.
Without expounding upon the physical stuff, the adrenalin, etc, I will say it was among the most gratifying work, one SAR case at a time, of any work I’ve done before or since.

Some drug lord somewhere is really really mad.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he’s at least a little bit peeved.
