Ann Coulter…

…weighs in on RINO McCain. She is spot-on, to the twentieth power.

No matter who those of us with a conservative point of view vote for to face Hillary in the general election, it is inconceivable that it be McCain!

“So who,” I find myself asking, “then?”

Truthfully, I haven’t a clue.

The only two true across-the-board conservatives have departed from the race, but McCain’s still there, and he seems to be garnering increasingly more support with his particular line of Bravo Sierra.

With eleven days left to decide, I can’t say that I’m all that thrilled at the prospect of selecting the “best” option from among the dubious pickings that remain. We are, after all, talking about electing the next President of The United States, not the next Dog Catcher General, and on a more immediate note, the candidate who has to face, debate and defeat Hillary Clinton (if Obama wins the Democratic nomination, I hope the devil and his retinue are dressed very warmly, indeed!) on a “no matter what” basis.

I hate to have to steal a line from my dear, profoundly missed late grandmother, but oy vey!

I’m not planning on voting for McCain, Seth. I’ve just about decided on Romney. We do have to choose, whether we like the choices we have or not. Of the ones who are left I think Romney really is the most conservative and at least he can’t be bribed or bought as he’s rich as Midas. He doesn’t have to promise to back a lot of pork barrel projects in return for a contribution. He has changed his mind on a couple of issues, but so have I. After all, until Carter came along I was a registered Democrat! People do grow and change over time.

At least he’s electable and has a good chance of beating the Democrats, since a state doesn’t get much more liberal than Massachusetts and he managed to be elected governor there. He has more experience regarding fixing a broken economy than any of the others, so I think my mind is finally made up. Also, he’s a fabulous speaker, and that can’t hurt.

We must get on with it. Whoever you choose, you’re right… you don’t have much time left. I’m trying to help you decide, but I won’t have a problem if you disagree with anything I’ve said in this comment.

I gave myself the “Awesome comemnt” award on Fractured Friday today. Stop on by. It pretty much explains where I’m coming from.

    Blessings! :)

I am still completely confused myself and all lost since Fred dropped out.

I dont know which one of them would serve me better.

And I dont have a clue who the frontrunner is.

    Gayle –

I considered Romney, based largely on Goat’s endorsement of the man, along with Fred Thompson, after Tom Tancredo dropped out of the race. Fred won hands down. Romney is still on my possibilities menu, whereas Huckabee is not, and certainly not McCain.

The problem here is that absent both Tom and Fred, we are faced with choices that reflect less than 100% of what we expect from any truly conservative candidates. This means that no matter who we vote for, we are essentially purchasing, or attempting to purchase, a diluted product.

What we each have to decide, then, is what concessions we can live with (a sorry state of affairs, indeed!) in a candidate in order to support those attributes we consider as taking priority.

Do we want an in-your-face supporter of both Israel and the War On Terror who is also pro-choice? Do we want a pro-lifer who is for low taxes and limited government but weak on immigration enforcement? Do we want… Well, you know what I mean.

This really does suck, any way you look at it. It is certainly the equivalent of going shopping for a certain item and finding that the only products available are… well, say you want to buy a CD boom box with dual cassette, and you discover that you can either buy a CD player with single cassette capability or a dual cassette player without a CD player.

I’m actually weighing two candidates right now, Romney and Giuliani. Both have their pros and cons. Both have political management experience (as a governor and a mayor, respectively). I have reservations about both, Giuliani moreso, and Mitt will probably get my vote, though I’m also taking a closer look at Giuliani. I lived in New York City while he was mayor, and saw first hand that he gets results — he was faced with a hell of a clean-up in the wake of Hurricane Dinkins, and he delivered.

However, my next post will feature a link to a well written pro-Giuliani piece by Julia Gorin, and I will add my own comments — some of his shortcomings that she fails to bring up as reasons not to consider him the ideal candidate.

    Marie –

We are faced, once again, with voting for the lesser of several evils.

It’s sort of ridiculous to me at this point. As Old Soldier so perfectly defined today’s Republican Party in a comment on my last post, they are more about keeping Hillary out of the White House than about anything else.

So here we have, for me — this is where the ridiculous part comes in — a situation in which rather than voting for a candidate for proactive reasons, I’ll be voting in the primary to try and keep McCain out of the general election, then in the general election to keep Hillary out of the White House.

It would be really refreshing to have a candidate remain in the race long enough to afford the opportunity to vote for him on his merits!

  5. Goat Says:

Ann is backing Mitt as is NRO and many other conservative icons. I have always been a big fan of Tom Tancredo but was still backing Mitt and Tom has endorsed him also anf about 75% of Fredheads are moving to Mitt as well.

  6. Seth Says:

    Goat –

I’ll most likely be voting for Mitt as well (about 80% sure at this time), but I am looking at Giuliani as well, mainly for his attributes as a manager and as a man who has more than a non-participant’s involvement in anti-terrorism (in his case, as a one-time investigator{as a U.S. attorney} of terrorism related incidents), as well as his no-nonsense attitude toward same.

One consideration is the likelihood of one or the other beating Hillary in the general election. So far, in that regard I believe Rudy may have a better chance — once the nominees are in place, the entire contest will change dramatically; we will no longer be deciding upon which of our own is best for the job, we will be pitting our choice against “the enemy”, and with the Clinton machine filling that role, things will get really down and dirty. Giuliani is more of a street fighter from that perspective, a lot tougher.

However, on the other side of the coin, we have to keep an eye on the far end of the election: How will our chosen candidate perform, as a conservative, once he becomes President? That’s where I see Romney winning out.

    Decisions, decisions… :-(

  7. Tom Says:

The sad part of it all is that none of the candidates, Republican or Democrat, are what this country needs.

Definitely a sad state of affairs…

  8. Seth Says:

    Tom –

I agree whole(but sad) heartedly. Everyone clamors for a 100% conservative president and/or a Reaganite POTUS, but when the opportunity comes along to vote for one, they give him short shrift and vote for those whose conservatism is tainted with too many liberal ideas.

In January, 2009, all those folks will get exactly what they deserve, though, unfortunately, the rest of us will have to share in it as well.
